You are on the phone with a program, notepad in hand, unsure what to ask first. Start with the basics. The right questions reveal a lot fast.

Here is what we tell families to ask before they commit:

• Accreditation and licensing. Is the center state licensed? Who accredits it, and can they name the body?
• Clinical staffing. Which licensed clinicians run care? What is the therapist to client ratio? Who covers medical needs?
• Family involvement. Are families included in treatment? How often, and in what format?
• Aftercare planning. When does discharge planning begin? What support exists after a client leaves?
• Measuring outcomes. How does the center define progress? What do they track, and will they share it honestly?

Ask follow-up questions too. A good program welcomes them. Vague answers are a signal worth noticing.

Take notes on each call. Compare them side by side. You will see patterns quickly.
